Are Probiotics Always the Answer? Not Necessarily!

28 Jan 2025

Probiotics are widely celebrated as a gut health miracle, but for some people—especially those with conditions like Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)—they may actually do more harm than good.

SIBO occurs when bacteria overgrow in the small intestine. Adding probiotics without understanding your gut’s unique balance can aggravate symptoms like bloating and discomfort. This is why it’s essential to know the strain of bacteria in your probiotics.

However, probiotics aren’t always harmful. They can be incredibly beneficial for individuals with microbiome deficiencies, particularly after antibiotic use, where certain strains help restore gut diversity. Strains like Saccharomyces boulardii and Bifidobacterium can support gut health by outcompeting harmful bacteria and promoting a balanced microbiome. Probiotics may also be useful in cases of post-infectious IBS, where gut flora needs replenishing.

If you suspect you have gut imbalances, rather than reaching for a generic probiotic, focus on identifying root causes. Tools like dietary changes, targeted antimicrobials, or gut health testing may be more effective solutions for lasting relief.
