Supplements for Anxiety
29 Mar 2023

There are a bunch of supplements that can help with anxiety. It's important to note that these shouldn't be used to cover up an unhealthy lifestyle. For some, an unhealthy lifestyle may be the true underlying cause of anxiety. For more information on that, click below to see my blog with nutrition and anxiety.

Tryptophan: An amino acid that plays a crucial role in the production of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that is involved with regulating mood and anxiety. Low levels of serotonin are associated with anxiety and depression. I would also be careful with high amounts when supplementing with this.
Omega 3's: Found in supplements like fish oil. They can reduce inflammation, help with brain functioning, and have a calming effect on the body. This is an important one to focus on since most people are low in omega 3's.
L-Theanine: Like tryptophan this is also an amino acid. It is found in green tea and is a very promising natural treatment for anxiety. L-theanine increases alpha brain waves which can lead to a calming and relaxing state. The relaxing state that you get from it will not cause drowsiness or loss of focus. It can also be taken as a powder or a pill.
Ashwagandha: This herb has been used for centuries to help with anxiety and stress. A lot of studies have shown promising benefits in helping people that were chronically stressed. It has other health benefits that come along with it like improved brain function and reducing inflammation.
Lavender: Another popular herb that has been used for anxiety. You can use it as a spray, tea, or with a diffusor for essential oils. It can help relax the body by decreasing your heart rate, blood pressure, and has also been known to help with sleep.
Bacopa: This herb has also been used for centuries for its brain boosting benefits. Not only has it been shown to help with anxiety, but also memory, learning, and promoting relaxation. It also has been shown to reduce levels of cortisol (the stress hormone). Commonly taken in pill form but also comes in powders.
