What to Do When You're Unwell Despite 'Normal' Lab Results

13 Feb 2024

This can be very frustrating for a lot of people. You are looking for answers as to why you’re feeling unwell, go to the doctors for bloodwork and everything comes back normal.

5-6 years ago, I wasn't nearly as healthy as I am now. During that time I would breakout in severe hives daily. I was convinced that this is just what happens and I have to deal with it. But once I started eating healthy that completely went away. We’re often told that our health symptoms just happen and there is nothing we can do about it. Our health symptoms don’t just happen out of thin air. There is an imbalance somewhere in your body. There is a root cause for everything. You may be falling into a rabbit hole where you’re prescribed medication after medication to cover up these symptoms rather than going over where all this is even coming from, which can actually heal your body.

It’s time to look elsewhere. Here are some examples of where your health symptoms may be coming from.

  • Nutrient deficiencies: Being low or even having an excess of a certain nutrient can lead to certain health issues. The most common deficiencies are magnesium, vitamin D, zinc, and omega 3’s. Being low in magnesium can cause headaches, anxiety, trouble sleeping and much more. Different nutrients have different symptoms of deficiencies and excess, which is why it’s important to get these checked and analyze your symptoms.

  • Looking at your gut function: Probably the most important and a lot of people do have a disrupted gut. Everything starts in the gut. Neurotransmitters are heavily regulated in the gut. In fact, 95% of serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter that makes you feel good is made in the gut. So if your gut is inflamed, you may have a hard time making serotonin. You also want to take a look at your gut permeability, which is root cause for many chronic diseases. When the lining in your gut is damaged from stress, poor nutrition, medications, toxins, or other triggers, it can cause food particles to make its way into your bloodstream and lead to a wide variety of different symptoms. Commonly referred to as “leaky gut”. This may cause you to have bad reactions to a lot of different foods, a weakened immune system, and fatigue.

  • Hormones & Stress: Chronic stress can damage your body heavily in many different ways. It can damage your gut, disrupt absorption from food and nutrients, cause weight gain, brain fog, sleep issues, and much more. Getting your cortisol levels checked or getting a 24 hour adrenal stress index test would be a good indicator of how well your adrenal glands are working. Looking at a full thyroid panel would also give you some answers.

  • Toxins: Heavy metals, mold, and other chemicals can cause a lot of damage to your body especially over a long period of time. Depending on your occupation you may be more at risk. For example, painters can experience this because they are exposed to xylene which is a toxin in paint that can disrupt your nervous system in a number of ways. A lot of different symptoms can come from this and we often don’t even know it. A heavy metals or toxin screening will give you some answers.

  • Genetic testing: Methylation is the way your body metabolizes certain nutrients and how well specific pathways work. This biochemical process is happening over and over again in the body. Looking at a methylation panel is ideal pinpointing if you have a higher or lower specific nutrient need then someone else. People usually fall into the category of over methylators or under methylators. There is a lot of different symptoms that can come from an imbalance in methylation. These processes have a lot to do with your detox pathways, brain health, gut, and hormones.
